Shockwave Therapy Sydney
Radial shockwave therapy for chronic tendon and soft-tissue conditions that have not responded to traditional treatment. Available at our Homebush and Pendle Hill clinics.
What Is Shockwave Therapy?
A non-invasive, drug-free treatment that delivers high-energy acoustic waves into injured tissue to kick-start the body’s own healing response.
How Shockwave Works
Acoustic pressure waves stimulate blood flow, break down calcified tissue, and trigger collagen remodelling in injured tendons. Most patients feel meaningful improvement within 3 to 5 sessions.
Backed by Clinical Research
Shockwave therapy is recommended in international clinical guidelines for chronic plantar fasciitis, calcific shoulder tendinopathy and Achilles tendon issues. Success rates of 70–80% are reported in published trials.
Conditions We Treat With Shockwave
Most effective on chronic tendon and fascia conditions that have lasted longer than 3 months.
Plantar Fasciitis
Chronic heel pain that has not responded to stretching, orthotics or rest.
Achilles Tendinopathy
Mid-portion or insertional Achilles pain in runners and active adults.
Tennis & Golfer’s Elbow
Chronic lateral or medial elbow pain in office workers and athletes.
Patellar Tendinopathy
Jumper’s knee pain at the front of the kneecap during sport.
Calcific Shoulder Tendinopathy
Calcium deposits in the rotator cuff causing pain and stiffness.
Trigger Points & Muscle Knots
Persistent muscle pain in the back, shoulders or glutes.
How Shockwave Sessions Work
A typical course is 3 to 5 sessions, spaced one week apart.
Assessment
Your physiotherapist confirms shockwave is the right treatment for your condition and explains what to expect during the course.
Treatment Sessions
Each shockwave session takes around 30 minutes. The applicator delivers pulses to the affected area — you feel a strong tapping sensation but it is well tolerated.
Recovery & Return
You can usually walk out and resume normal activity straight away. Your physio will give you exercises to support the tissue’s healing response between visits.
Common Questions About Shockwave Therapy
What to expect from your shockwave treatment at Hopevana.
Does shockwave hurt?
You will feel an intense tapping sensation during the pulses. The energy level is dialled up to your tolerance and most patients describe it as uncomfortable but bearable. Soreness for 24–48 hours afterwards is normal.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients need 3 to 5 sessions spaced one week apart. Your physio will reassess after the third session and let you know if more are needed.
Is shockwave covered by health funds?
Yes — shockwave is treated as a physiotherapy consultation by all major Australian health funds and your extras cover applies. We swipe your card via HICAPS and you only pay the gap.
Can I work out the same day?
Light activity is fine but we recommend avoiding heavy loading of the treated tendon for 48 hours. Your physio will tailor activity guidelines to your sport or job.
How long until I feel better?
Most patients notice meaningful improvement within 3 sessions, with continued gains for up to 12 weeks afterwards as the tissue continues to remodel.
