If you were hurt in a motor vehicle accident in NSW, your rehabilitation is covered by the CTP scheme — and at Hopevana, we bill your insurer directly, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to you. This page explains CTP physiotherapy in Sydney from the claim side: what counts as an injury, what treatment you can access, who pays for it, and the order you need to do things in.

That order matters more than most people realise. Turning up for treatment before you have notified the insurer is the single most common way people end up with a bill they did not expect.

What CTP Covers — and Who Can Claim

CTP (Compulsory Third Party, or Green Slip) insurance covers people injured in motor vehicle accidents in NSW. It is not limited to drivers.

  • Drivers and passengers
  • Pedestrians struck by a vehicle
  • Cyclists and motorcyclists

The injuries we most often treat under CTP are whiplash and neck strain, mid and lower back pain, shoulder injuries from seatbelt loading and bracing, knee injuries from dashboard impact, and general soft tissue and joint injuries. Headaches and jaw pain after whiplash are common too, and worth mentioning even if they seem unrelated.

CTP is not WorkCover. CTP covers motor vehicle accidents; WorkCover covers injuries that happen at work. If you were driving for work when it happened, both may apply — tell us and we will help you work out which scheme to bill. Our WorkCover guide covers that side.

The Order to Do Things In

This is the part the other pages skip, and it is what determines whether your treatment is paid for.

01

Report the accident to police

Get an event number. You will need it, and lodging a claim is harder without it.

02

Notify the CTP insurer and get a reference number

This is the step people miss. Contact the insurer of the vehicle at fault, tell them you were injured, and get a claim or reference number. Until you have that number, treatment is not covered.

03

Book with a SIRA-approved provider

Bring your reference number and your insurer’s details to the first appointment. We confirm what is approved before we treat you.

04

Lodge the full claim within six months

The personal injury claim form should go to the insurer as soon as possible, and no later than six months from the accident date. Earlier is better — delay can affect a claim even inside that window.

Can You Start Treatment Before the Claim Is Accepted?

Often yes, but not automatically, and this is worth being precise about.

Under the NSW CTP scheme, a physiotherapist can provide up to two early intervention sessions before you have formally lodged your claim — but only where you have notified the insurer, received a claim or reference number, and the insurer has approved that early treatment. Access is at the insurer’s discretion. Separately, an initial assessment can be carried out once you have a CTP claim number.

What this means practically. You do not have to wait for liability to be decided before starting rehabilitation — which matters, because early treatment gives soft tissue injuries the best chance of settling rather than becoming long-term. But you do need to have contacted the insurer first. Call us on 0411 057 420 before booking and we will tell you exactly where you stand.

Who Pays, and What It Costs You

Nothing, for approved treatment. Hopevana is an approved physiotherapy provider with the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA), Approval No. 15827, and we bill your CTP insurer directly.

What happensWhat you pay
Approved CTP sessionsNothing — invoiced to your insurer, no gap

Treatment beyond what is approvedWe tell you before it happens, never after
If your claim is declinedWe talk through the alternatives — Medicare CDM, private health or DVA

What CTP Physiotherapy in Sydney Actually Involves

The first appointment is mostly assessment: what happened, what hurts, how it is affecting sleep, work and driving. From there, treatment typically combines hands-on work to settle pain and restore movement, a graded exercise program to rebuild the capacity lost since the accident, and honest guidance on returning to driving and work.

Whiplash in particular responds better to early, active management than to rest and a collar. Where useful, we can add remedial massage, dry needling, acupuncture, cupping, fascia therapy (IASTM) or shockwave therapy — all available in-house at both clinics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will CTP physiotherapy cost me anything?

No, for approved treatment. Hopevana is a SIRA-approved provider and bills your CTP insurer directly, so there is no payment on the day and no gap fee. If you ever approach the limit of what your insurer has approved, we will tell you before your next appointment rather than after it.

How soon after the accident should I be seen?

As soon as you have notified the insurer and have a reference number. Early, active treatment gives whiplash and soft tissue injuries the best chance of settling rather than becoming persistent. If you are sore but unsure whether it is worth it, call and ask — that conversation costs nothing.

Can I be treated before my claim is accepted?

Usually yes, within limits. The scheme allows up to two early intervention sessions before you formally lodge a claim, provided you have notified the insurer, have a claim or reference number, and the insurer has approved that early treatment. It is at the insurer’s discretion, so contact them first, then call us and we will confirm where you stand.

How long do I have to lodge a CTP claim?

The personal injury claim form should be submitted as soon as possible and no later than six months from the date of the accident. Lodging earlier is better, because delay can affect a claim even within that window. For questions about the claim itself rather than your treatment, CTP Assist can help on 1300 656 919.

Does it matter whose fault the accident was?

For treatment and care benefits in the early stages, the NSW scheme provides cover regardless of fault. Fault can affect longer-term entitlements and any damages claim, which is a legal question rather than a physiotherapy one — CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 or your solicitor is the right place for that. Either way, come and get assessed.

I was driving for work. Is that CTP or WorkCover?

Potentially both, and the two schemes are separate. CTP covers motor vehicle accidents; WorkCover covers workplace injuries. Where you were driving as part of your job, either may apply. Hopevana is approved for both and bills either directly, so tell us the circumstances and we will help you sort out which one should be billed.
